Right Light

This is my second favorite bar in Portland, even though I almost never go there. The atmosphere is dimly lit with some good downtempo in the background, the commotion of conversation and billiards balls smacking each other. The Night Light. Simple and stylish. For those fortunate enough to live close in SE, this should be a regular hangout. You might think that with the exterior in a Mondrian grid, that it would be pretentious and filled with those who know what a Mondrian grid is. (more…)

Sandpeople | The One And Only

Monday, February 19th, 2007

sandpeoplethumb.jpgPortland | Hank Stram

The beats are good and tight, smooth production with rhymes that can match, sometimes. It’s an up and down album though. The rhymes by both Only One and Al-One only equal Sapient’s beats on about 3 songs. The other songs are either miss matched between the unoriginal delivery and cadence of their flows or the sound is used as just background props to fill every available second with words. (more…)

Bust-ed

The rusty trombone, bag piping, Sanduchiʼs harmonica, the Gene Simmonʼs special, and the acquaintance rape… If there were two qualities that one must possess to stand out as head above water better than the competition in these techniques, they would be; (1) strong understanding of harmonies and rhythm set to trajectory octaves with an observance of time and tonal control. (2) a mouth. If I were to Venn diagram a career that would converge these two God given talents into one ideal vocation, the intersecting area would be the shaded vicinity covering “Porn Star” on your guidance counselors “wheel-o-the–future”. Yes, that is correct…an honest to God porn star. (more…)

Snooty Stoner

Vapor is changing how cannabis is enjoyed all over the world. Raising the quality and effects to new highs. Highs that put everyone in a position to become a discerning cannabis snob. A recent study claimed that the vapor from cannabis was overwhelmingly THC (95%). Versus the smoke from burning it, which contained over 100 other chemicals and only had 12% THC. (more…)

Put A Quarter In Your Ass Cuz You’re Play’n Ya’self

Sure, everybody knows that Justin Timberlake can beat box, but how many of you know that heʼs a douche bag. For years, Timberlake has been tying to study the art of Fogatron, one of this continents sickest and most accredited beat boxers, who makes his humble abode in our very own Portland, Or. Winning an unheard of two Pizazz! Competitions in the same year, touring throughout Asia and Western Europe and opening for hip-hop icon Guru pretty much solidifies him as a bigger deal than anybody who was ever in NʼSync (especially Joey Fatone, who has yet to publicly come out and tell people that he is fat). The Last/third Day Of A Bender

Super Destoyers, The Moneychangers, and Howie and the Hot Knives. The last of three nights of music by Portland area rock’n roll bands. The new Slabtown is being put to use how it should be used. Especially with the back room finally cleaned up and ready to have beer spilled all over it. (more…)

Rock Out With Your Box Out

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

rockboxthumb.jpgPortland | Dan Hagan

Friday night at Holocene. This Rock Box thing is getting better every time I show up. People were get’n down and feel’n pretty loose. A guy danced around with his shirt off for a bit, a little too loose if ya know what I mean. But you can blame it on Matt Nelkin or Kez or even Dundiggity. Hell even through in Rev. Shines. They’re all guilty of providing people a world of beats and dancing where having no shirt is no big deal. (more…)

Seeing Polka Dots

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

fingerbangcitythumb.jpgPortland | Dan Hagan

A few weeks ago, I missed Finger Bang City at Dante’s and hoped they would play again soon. Well they did just that and left me seeing polka dots. The badassness of Mutha Superior, Sloppy Biscuit and Capt. Fingerbang were tearing down Devil’s Point. Glorifying mustaches, Virgina Slims and bragging about their tits all while the Capt. put down the beatz. (more…)
