Olympia | Hank Stram
Le Voyeur is one of the coolest places in Cascadia. This small cafe/bar/performance space is what makes a smaller town like Olympia such a creative and cool place. With free shows and a vegan slant to the menu Le Voyeur is what makes the difference between a conservative Salem and a liberal Olympia. Thus it’s expected that I would of unexpectedly seen the Shee Bee Gees there. Heather (drums), Ellen (bass), Anna (guitar) & Alex (tamborine). All four on vocals.
Early Bee Gees songs were strong examples of mainstream pop. Catchy but with themes you could relate to like early Neil Diamond songs. Four attractive and smart ladies give these songs a new meaning. Four women together singing melodic sixties pop make anything better. After seeing them and now listening on myspace, they could deliver the worst news and it would make it painless.
Crooning, “Stan your wife, your wife, oooohh Stan. Your wife is leave’n ya.”
“Ah, thanks Shee Bee Gees.”
I must say though, these songs on myspace are good but live, they really capture your attention. ‘Lonely nights’ was such a song. Not only good singers but accomplished muscians. To see an all female band performing songs written by all men and do it with a more bitter sweet touch is rare. This was only their sixth live performance ever.
Now in the paper, the headliner tonight was the Green Nuns. When they arrived, they were the Young Fabians. After the show, they had no name. Now these motherfuckers rocked. This was their first show and the lead singer didn’t know some songs well. But what the fuck ever. He put so much energy into the show, could of been reading from “a maintenance manual for the inner self” and it still would of kicked my ass. So there ya have it.
My only complaint is that the tamborine’ing felt a little novice for Alex and That Guy® lead singer of the other band. I think they still hadn’t mastered the tamobrine and that insecurity showed through. A very understandable flaw that comes from bands still being young.
