Portland | Hank Stram
I had every intention of relaying last nights show featuring Copy and the new Panther. Two names that come up more often in conversations about local music than just about anyone else’s. Things didn’t work out that way it seems. The band after Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, Lemonade, fucking rocked. From the bay, they were a combination of electronica and a jam band. Both Copy and Panther are really good. It’s just that after the intensity of Lemonade a guy with a laptop and a guitar keyboard doesn’t seem that captivating. After three guys, one playing bass, one singing and playing the keyboard, and another standing pounding on both a traditional drum set and a drum pad all combined into radiating energy and dancing, you’re going to need to keep up.
Lemonade is a band to see live. They are three members, two of which told me their names and due to the nights dedication to the lost arts of leisure and pleasure, my memory fails me. I’ve just finished listening to the songs on their myspace which are a complete juxtaposition to what I heard on Wednesday Night. The singer told me later that he comes from a background in electronica and has always loved it. This is way to perform and still have that propulsive feel of club music. Copy and Panther could bring a little more to the table I believe. I have been really bored with the state of music and performng for an audience. Meaning that watching a guy screw around on his laptop is not worth the money or time. That is what friends are for.
Copy was all dance. He did what he does, rock out and last night with a guitar keyboard he rocked even harder. Panther without a drummer last night would have been an awkward situation. But there was a drummer which made it so much more entertaining. If they could bring live action from the studio to the stage, that would open up more and more in roads for passionate performances.
