“The Generational Gap” is such a horrible and clichéd tangent to rant about, but hearing the words prate off my own lips brought me back to when it was such a growing pain of an experience. If born into the peak of Generation X one would most likely embody the excess of 80’s apathy and vanity while recollecting memories of snorting in the boy’s room, complaining how hard it was to be a pretty person with problems and vowing to remain 18 till you died. A young-buck born into the Generation Y juggernaut may have upper-management written all over them. They buy into the hype, try to sell society on the hype, take the money they sold the hype for and make it rain at a strip club later that evening. Every generation tries to be less like the preceding while thinking very little of the generation following it…human nature is shallow, but never as black and white as its X & Y labels. (more…)

There is a very short list of 5 really bad places to visit during the month of August.
5) Grandma’s House. Even if she lets you stay up late to watch wrestling you’re going to have to give her a goodbye hug, which feels like hugging pudding skins draped on an Ethiopian.
4) Hell.
3) Prison. All of that hot prison-yard sweat you’ll be working up will have the boy’s cat calls quickly turning into the boy’s spiny cat penis’ up your fresh-fish ass. (more…)

Justin Long, Ravi and Mercedes celebrated birthdays on Saturday night amongst a club filled with people getting down. Delivering a good dose of dance/house music to Portland like the torrential rain that night. Relief from a dry spell of good dancing at a club. Also, for the first time, the side room at Pala was open. (more…)

This is your completely biased guide to Musicfest NW 2007. First I’d like to start out by saying that doing the research on all these bands has been fun and also annoying. While I’ve tried to focus on anything with interesting sounds, this guide is really intended to omit boredom for the sake of supporting your local sappy singer/songwriter. I do wish the festival was designed around a more bike friendly venue cluster, but never mind that, it is what it is. So the mission, for what it’s worth, is to help navigate you to the land of good sound in a nice fat free condensed version. (more…)

I’ve always kept a pretty open mind about everything, from drugs to sex to rock and roll, my motto is try everything once. I’ve stayed up smoking speed with a meth head from Alaska, after watching him stay up for a week straight (we were neighbors at the time). I listened to his delusional diatribes about government and how he planned to build an invisible airplane that he could then fly into the White House. I’ve done coke off of toilet tops and tits, and ranted and raved for hours about nothing with other people who seemed to agree with everything I said. (more…)

Vice: an immoral or evil habit or practice
Vice Magazine: a print/online magazine founded in NY and built around anti-establishment themes. Currently cashing in on the Midwest’s 14-16 year old and/or intellectually equivalent to a 14-16 year old demographic who are also looking to be counter culture or looking to say something counter culture and/or ignorant on the magazine’s online comment section.
Vice City: a video game that I actually canceled an anniversary date with then girlfriend of 3 years in order to play until 4am. I killed people with a ninja sword.
my vice: Coffee. I take an iced, undiluted cold press coffee with sweet chai tea and a smidgen of cream. (more…)

Branx on Saturday night was the place to be. Dark, loud and full of dancing. Coco B’s SNAP! is proving to be the next night to be a fun as fuck at Branx. A sound system that rumbles the floors while keeping it clear. After several dj’s Sulsbury, Freaky Outty, and Colin Jones, Branx blew up when WOAH DANG Inc took over. (more…)

After needing more than three swallows of whiskey to make it through the the opening band, Thee More Shallows, we stood front row watching the boys of Subtle set up. The stage was set. Action. That’s right a show that i didn’t get bored at. This group has released two LPs, both excellent. Subtle live at the Doug Fir made for a marvelous Monday evening. I had high expectations for Subtle. They are part of a new direction in electronic music that is best experienced live as a band. (more…)

Group shower arrangements have gotten quite a hilarious representation in today’s entertainment media. That pack of zany, sex crazed boys in Porky’s films enjoyed a little peek-see as the girl’s of gym class were busy with some upkeep on their tender bosoms and finely feathered bushes; all to the dismay of an ornery, androgynous gym teacher. In the straight to Cinemax after your parents went to bed movie, Cellblock Sisters, the director went so far as to allow these incarcerated vixens ample touching upon each other’s breasts; giving their prison mates such a soap filled scrub that you could eat even the stickiest of honeys off their squeaky clean lady lumps. Hip hop is a very delicate art form in which a mc has the opportunity to cast themselves out to the world as a catalyst of thought and insight as well as entertainment. When it’s done with the sheer unprotected madness that drives a man to grab a mic, it’s untouchable, but when it falls short of representing a greater story then themselves, it feels like an exercise in masturbation.
