Portland | Ivana Repas
Being an artist in Portland, an artist period is a broad term. People have a lot to say it seems and through Art, expression becomes boundless, possibilities endless and the outcomes unpredictable to say the least. Many make grand things through their minds and capability to create. But, does sticking feathers up your butt makes you a chicken?
Or to say is there a diference between true gifted ones and the ones that just want to be that perticular “light”, the amount of things we see these days? Eh that….
This year Portland hosted an international animation/instalation festival Platform and it was damn good. The Pearl was flooded with images, tore up by surrealism of a world drawn and prettied up by creations. All kinds of minds and ideas involved, many examples of things never tried before. An anime
explosion. I was impressed. The list of artist stretched- Argentina ,London, L.A, Tokyo, Berlin, Portland… and on.
So, I was asked to say few words about “Reduced Conception” work of Daniela
Repas, Thornton Wilson and Todd Tawd (Weapons of Mass Compassion). An installation peace that was an unfinished project at the time of enrollment and an experimental move in its structure for all three artists involved. It took a victory in it’s category and blew every ones minds. It stood out. What is it that made it so, is what I would like to point out.
The thing about art is you can’t deny it, y you can’t say it isn’t, you can’t say it’s worthless even if it is the most pointless minor obstruction of an image, color or shape. If someone says it’s art you have to “eat it”. So what can you do? Sort trough the throw up of mediocre minds trying to gain personal attention through unmoving series of failed attempts to make something powerful until you find the works of the artist. Yes, artist! Hand picked individuals gifted by Mother nature that have an ability to create things that make the rest of us feel the power of that human phenomenon. The times we go “Ah… Only “they” can do, what they do, the way they do it. It was thought to be so since the beginning of time.
So what I’m saying is: “Reduced Conception” was created in front of my eyes as a vision of three people that have something I don’t. And I don’t know who you are…. But let’s say you don’t either Picasso. It was raw and knitted through these peoples existence until it gained it’s own form and became something much bigger than them.
Art.
That’s the only way it’s made. That’s the only way it stands out and
moves. Goes back to power of only selected few to which I can only say
over and again: “Thank you motherfuckers for being talented.”
So, sticking feathers up your butt does NOT make
you a chicken.
Did you know that?
