Because I haven’t seen the sun for about a month and the Alligators new release, Piggy and Cups, sounds like a sunny afternoon on Alki Beach, Stanley Park or Mt Tabor. Almost like you forgot what warm air and sunshine feels like, now it’s time to smile and soak it up. Warm melodies and sunny sounds are their trademarks. Steering clear of any gimmicks or thoughtless explorations their music is poppy but not sweet.
These are crafted songs, they are projects with the souls of 5 men who’ve years of formal training and playing in the Puget Sound. The Alligators on Piggy and Cups give that attention and creativity to these beautiful songs. Recorded in Jason McGerr’s (Death Cab for Cutie) Two Stick Audio in Seattle, Piggy and Cups has elements of sixties harmonies, with subtle nuances that are only the Alligators.

Pulsing and thoughtful rhythms help to push the melodies without shoving them. Nothing in their songs sounds out of balance or forced. “Conquerer” has whispering guitar with vocal harmonies structured comfortably and intelligently. With “Why aren’t you Weeping” slide guitar takes the place of sadness and fills a void with subtle handclaps and small joyous sounds signaling optimism. Finally taking you by the hand, squeezing tight and flying off into afternoon daydreams.
Paced with introspection and the maturity to settle down with their strengths, this album is solid and strong. The Alligator’s Piggy and Cups is having your summer before you even have spring.
