Sir Thomas Gray, Pearl Dragon and DJ Gajamagic

We are  looking at a new branch of Hip Hop growing right in front of us. There is the Hip Hop we all know and are familiar with; The Lifesavas, Old Dominion, Cool Nutz, Grieves, Blue Scholars and Cancer Rising. Then there is this whole new generation that has grown up on Diplo, Cool Kids and MIA. This new generation is ready and able to cause frenzy’s that are more Mosh Pit than predictable rapping.
Nowhere else in Cascadia is this new energy and hybrid Hip Hop more powerful and accepted than Seattle. To celebrate the cities new sounds and generation, Seattle’s community put together a 2 night showcase of the best young talent. Talent that is changing the genre or even creating a new one.
At the vanguard of this hybrid is Champagne Champagne, a trio of attitude, talent and intelligence. Even though they may have a ferocious live show, their lyrics are interesting and sometimes odd, not in an awkward way but in an unexpected and clever way.

Formed less than three years ago they have risen to be considered one of the best groups in Seattle. Playing at the EMP last September they were so live Pearl Dragon walked out on to the crowd supported by only their hands. No one could do that in Portland. Spots on Bumbershoot and Sasquatch have given them national attention but no regional attention.
Living in Portland you’d have no idea who they were. The Mercury? Not one mention. WWeek? They don’t even know what “Hip Hop” is.
So it’s up to Renegade to give you the what’s up with Seattle’s music. I understand, no one from Seattle comes down here. They never give Portland a name to remember. Something to remind Portland that there is a city just to the North. A city that has always embraced music, and now it’s Portland’s turn to accept this gift. Champagne Champagne at Rotture and February 5th with Guidance Counselor. Big tings are happen’n, get in tune with the future.
